We are located in the Gila National Forest, on the edge of the Wilderness Area, in beautiful Lake Roberts, New Mexico, 29 miles north of Silver City. Spirit Canyon Lodge is open all year, so you may enjoy our 4 gentle seasons, cool nights and bright sunny days, fresh mountain air, and starry, starry nights!

Miles and miles of hiking, packing, horses, horseback-riding, and mountain biking trails are right at our doorstep.

It's an outdoorsman's paradise, with hunting, fishing at Lake Roberts, camping and many other activities, including bird-watching, right at your fingertips!

Or just relax in the quiet,
peaceful atmosphere of the Lodge.

The Gila (HE-la) National Forest is well known for its wildlife. Elk, deer, mountain lions, javelina, as well as over 340 species of birds are all found in the rugged, canyon country. The Gila is the oldest designated wilderness in the USA.

This area has been the setting for many books written by western adventure novelist, Louis L'Amour. The Ndee, Apache people are said to predate all other cultures present in this area, even preceeding the Pueblo Indians, referred to as the Mogollon and Mimbreno people of the Gila Cliff Dwellings, who attempted to settle in this region.

In later years, well known bands and war leaders like Cochise, Nana, Geronimo, Victorio and many others joined forces to drive all intruders from their sacred lands. It is also said that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid had many hide-outs in these mountains and canyons. Miners came later and flourished with rich strikes of gold, silver and copper. Today, there is still mining in the surrounding areas near Silver City.
